Methodology
Methodology and data sources
Grid Shopper presents electricity supply offers from official state rateboards in a more organized and contextualized format. We add historical tracking, usage forecasting, and bill estimates to help consumers navigate their supply options.
Data sources
- Official state rateboard filings for fixed-price electricity supply offers
- Utility default service rates and procurement auction results
- Historical weather data and utility usage statistics for forecast modeling
- Public utility commission dockets and regulatory filings
Data processing
- Filter out variable-rate and introductory promotional offers
- Normalize monthly fees into displayed per-kWh rates (where applicable)
- Organize offers by contract term length for easier visualization
- Track rate changes over time to show market trends
Usage forecasting and bill estimates
- Forecast average residential usage based on historical patterns and weather data
- Combine forecasted usage with current utility rates to estimate monthly bills
- Show both supply and delivery components separately
- Update forecasts daily based on latest weather information
What we don’t do
- We don’t verify or audit rateboard data. We assume state rateboards reflect accurate supplier filings.
- We don’t rank or recommend suppliers. We organize and visualize data so you can make your own comparisons.
- We don’t guarantee rate accuracy. Rates change frequently. Always verify final terms on the official rateboard before signing up.
